How to Choose the Best Bath Towel? 5 Essential Criteria

You’ve probably been here before: a towel that promised more than it delivered. Beautiful, soft to the touch, and then, after a few washes, it starts losing the very things that made it feel special. The volume flattens, the fabric stiffens, and drying takes longer every time.

So what are the best bath towels, and why do some hold up over the years while others don't? What separates them is rarely what you can see. It comes down to the fiber, the way the fabric is built, and the kind of details only daily use reveals.

In this article, we walk through the 5 criteria that separate a great bath towel from an ordinary one: softness, absorbency, composition, weight, and durability.

1. Softness: A Feel That Lasts

The softness of a bath towel comes down to the length of the cotton fiber.

That first impression is easy to manufacture with a surface finish. Over time, the effect wears away, and what remains is what actually sustains softness: the fiber itself.

Short cotton fibers produce uneven yarns with loose ends you can feel against your skin. Long-staple cotton fibers create smoother, more continuous yarns that hold their character wash after wash. That consistency is what separates an ordinary towel from a piece made to last.

At WATA, softness starts with the fiber, not the finish.

2. Absorbency: The Balance the Fabric Holds

A highly absorbent bath towel should pick up water efficiently and release it just as easily. Not every absorbent towel dries quickly, and not every quick-dry towel absorbs enough. It all depends on how the yarn and the fabric are constructed.

A fabric with enough space between its fibers lets water move in and out effortlessly, which also cuts down drying time.

WATA bath towels get that balance from AirDrop® technology. The air held inside the yarn allows water to be absorbed and released quickly.

3. Composition: Where It All Begins

The composition of a bath towel begins with the choice of fiber. Its length and uniformity shape how strong the yarn is, how it feels against your skin, and how the fabric behaves over the years.

At WATA, that choice is 100% long-staple Organic Cotton, backed by two certifications that meet different standards. GOTS certification guarantees cultivation without pesticides or synthetic chemical fertilizers, while OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 confirms the absence of harmful substances in contact with the skin.

Everything else follows: the weight, the color, the texture.

4. Weight: More Than a Number

Weight (GSM) indicates the density of the fabric. For a bath towel, the sweet spot usually falls between 600 and 750 g/m², dense enough to absorb and wrap around you without weighing you down.

A higher number does not automatically mean a better towel. Very high GSM can make a towel heavier and slower to dry, while a GSM that is too low compromises absorbency.

Even so, GSM alone doesn’t guarantee quality. It only means something when you read it alongside the fiber carrying that weight: a 700 g/m² towel made from short fibers is not better than a 600 g/m² towel made from long-staple Organic Cotton.

The right question is not "which one has the highest GSM?" but "what kind of experience am I looking for in a towel?"

5. Durability: The Quality Only Time Confirms

A good quality bath towel regains its volume once dry and holds its color over time, with no signs of wear in the fabric.

Much of that longevity comes down to how you wash it. A mild detergent, no fabric softener, and a moderate drying temperature all help preserve the fabric's feel and volume for longer. For the full step-by-step, see our Care Guide.

How to Recognize the Best Bath Towels?

Time is the ultimate test, but you don't have to wait for it. A quality bath towel gives itself away before the first use, in four signs:

  • Product details: look for the fiber type and the GSM. These are the two details that let you compare two towels without having either one in front of you.
  • Certifications: make sure the towels you buy carry GOTS and OEKO-TEX® Standard 100 certification.
  • When the towel arrives: hold it up to the light and check the density of the pile near the hem. That is where the fabric gives way first.
  • First wash: a well-made towel comes out of the machine fuller than it went in, because the loops open up. If it feels stiffer after that first wash, the initial soft touch likely came from a surface finish rather than the fiber.

The Same Quality, Different Expressions

Once you understand what sets a good towel apart, it becomes easier to look past a product's color or first impression.

Across the WATA collections, the quality stays the same. What changes is the way it feels:

  • BASIC: understated and calm, made to fit into everyday life with ease.
  • VIVO: the collection with the most presence, in both color and volume. Generous and enveloping, for anyone looking for a towel they can really feel.
  • JACQUARD: where the tradition of weaving meets contemporary design. Defined by pattern and relief, for anyone who finds a form of expression in texture.
